M. C. Escher Themes

Throughout M.C. Eschers life he experimented with a few important themes that can be seen in almost all of his work. These themes include his love for Italian landscapes, his fascination with Geometry, and his interest in perspective.

In his life Escher combined these themes to create the prints that still today put us in a state of wonder as we try to decipher the meaning of his extraordinary artwork.

To get a better understanding on how these themes played into Eschers life and prints check out the sections below.

Italian Landscapes

Escher spent 11 years living in Rome and traveling the Italian countryside. It was at this time that he met his wife and sketched hundreds of sketches that would become the basis for most of the architecture seen in his work. It was at this time that he both became interested in mathematics and perspective.

Geometry

After Escher left Italy in 1936-37 he became fascinated with mathematics particularly geometry in artwork. This inspiration can be seen in many of his famous works. Particularly notable is his work with tessellation which are still cited as important works by todays mathematicians.

Perspective

Eschers love for Geometry in art and his work sketching the sprawling Italian countryside led him to his work on perspective. Escher pushed the bounds of human perception creating works that seemed impossible. These impossible realties are some of his most famous works.
